The Papal Nuntio that refused to leave Syria and will now be Cardinal

The Papal Nuntio in Syria, Mario Zenari, will be made a Cardinal on November 19. With this appointment, Pope Francis is recognizing Zenari’s courage, who refused to leave Syria despite the conflict and the civil war.

With this gesture, the Pope is sending a clear message of closeness and support to the victims of ceaseless attacks and violence. In Zenari’s words: “For me, this mission God is asking me to do is a privilege and a moving experience, in its human aspect, too.”

Zenari has also stated that the unwavering work of consecrated people in the Syrian community is crucial, both for Christians and for Muslims, because they are a sign of God’s presence in the midst of a devastating civil war.
