In Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan, Iraq, thousands of refugees can be found. Many are Christians who escaped from the Nineveh Plain and Mosul when Daesh occupied their cities and homes. In the Ankawa district, Catholic NGO initiatives provide material and spiritual assistance to people living in refugee camps.
Iraq is one of the countries most affected by the Middle East crisis and in particular by the Syrian war. According to UN statistics by OCHA and UNHCR in July 2016, there are more than 10,000 people who urgently need medical assistance and there are already 3.4 million internally displaced persons.
