Today the international conference “Damascus, prism of hope” has begun. It was organized by the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome for the occasion of its 100th anniversary. It unites some of the most important personalities of the Eastern Churches, as well as testimonies of hope from countries in which Christians suffer from heightened violence and discrimination.
This congress seeks to offer an opportunity for dialogue and provide a forum for open discussion on the situation in the Middle East, especially in Syria, as the situation in this country is especially intense.
Speakers at the congress include Msgr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, the priest abducted by ISIS, Jacques Mourad, and the Chaldean bishop of Aleppo, Antoine Audo. Additionally, there will be several Patriarchs of the Eastern Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox. The event will also be attended by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
