In these years of struggle, the Nineveh Plains has seen the destruction of churches, shrines and religious images.
As such, a group of Italian sculptors and painters has donated an icon of the “Virgin of Tenderness” and an altar dedicated to the Transfiguration to the Iraqi Christian community and their friend Fr. Jalal Yako. He is an Iraqi priest who has been responsible for a refugee camp in Erbil for the past two years.
“ISIS has ravaged sacred places and devotional images, but even through art, it can be rebuilt, and the hands of an artist can really be at the service of beauty,” said one of the artists participating in the project.
