Cristóbal, the child born from his mother’s refusal to renounce Christianity

Rebeca Bitrus spent two years abducted by Boko Haram terrorists. While she knew that being Christian would mean greater trouble, there was no point when she desired to leave Christianity in order to suffer less violence. After suffering physical abuse and rape by one of the terrorists, she gave birth to Cristóbal.

In 2016, the army arrived in the area where Rebeca was kidnapped. Taking advantage of the chaos in the moment, she managed to flee. For a split second, she thought of leaving little Cristóbal. However, one of the soldiers from the Nigerian army encouraged her to take him with her. “Take him with you, you can teach him good,” he said.
