“I have received with sadness the news of the serious attacks which, precisely today, Easter Day, have filled Sri Lanka with mourning and pain.”

Pope Francis expressed his sadness at the attack on St. Sebastian and St. Anthony Churches on April 21 in Sri Lanka, where more than 300 people died.

St. Anthony’s Church is the busiest shrine in the country. In addition to these two Churches, an evangelical church in Batticaloa and four hotels in Colombo were also attacked. It is therefore the most violent attack on the Christian faithful in recent years.

Aid to the Church in Need has called on Christians to join in prayer posting a message on their Twitter account calling for “victims of the attacks in Sri Lanka.” The Pontifical Foundation also denounced that “once again Christians have been attacked on one of their most important feasts,” Easter Sunday.
