Msgr. Mitsuaki Takami, Archbishop of Nagasaki, had an interview with the Associated Press (AP) just days before Pope Francis visited Japan’s land. The archbishop remembered Catholic people’s obligation to work for world peace. He reminded them they have a responsibility to find peace to honor the Christian martyrs that died in Japan.
Msgr. Takami is a descendant of persecuted Christians of the sixteenth century and has many family members who lost their lives when the atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki on Aug. 9, 1945. However, this pain and suffering only motivates him more to continue searching for peace.
