The Aid to the Church in Need report “Free Your Prisoners” examines four case studies: China, Eritrea, Nigeria, and Pakistan, respectively.
The case study from China concerns the Bishop of Baoding, Monsignor James Su Zhimin, who was arrested in 1996 and of whom nothing has been known, although, after almost 25 years in prison, he is still alive. Requests from the family that saw some of its members under house arrest for an appeal launched in 2015 for the bishop’s release were futile. In the same year, the nephew finally met with religious affairs official Guo Wei, who said that if relations between China and the Vatican had improved, they would talk about the release of Monsignor Su Zhimin.
Despite the agreement between China and the Vatican in September 2018 to create “conditions for further cooperation,” the Chinese authorities have made no progress in reviewing the case.
