The Italian newspaper Avvenire reports the violence and murders suffered by the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church in recent months during the war in the region of Tigray. A confidential letter from the Ethiopian Church speaks of 78 religious that were killed and, according to some testimonies, Ethiopian and Eritrean troops entered the holy places and shot the religious.
In previous days, CNN had shown a video, in which the head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Mathias, condemned for the first time the genocide that the government of Abiy Ahmed was carrying out since November 4, 2020 against the people of Tigray.
The Secretary General of the Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church has said that the statements of His Holiness have not been approved by the Synod and are therefore personal opinions.
Ethiopia denies the massacres, but journalistic investigations by independent international media and human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, claim that at least 800 people, many of them believers on their way to the cathedral housing the Ark of the Covenant for the feast of the Virgin Mary, were massacred in cold blood by Eritrean soldiers.
