Monastery of Jabal: a pilgrimage that unites Christians and Muslims

Also this year, despite the problems related to the Covid-19 pandemic, many Egyptians, both Christians and Muslims, went to the Marian Monastery of Jabal al Tayr, in the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Samalut, to participate in the week of celebrations in memory of the birth of the Virgin Mary.

As reported by Agenzia Fides, the monastery of Jabal al Tayr was founded in the fourth century by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine and is one of the most dear sanctuaries to Coptic Christians.

But this place also shows the devotion of the Islamic world to the Mother of Jesus: many Muslims, throughout the year and especially in August – in the 15 days of celebration preceding and following the liturgical solemnity of the Dormition of Mary – go on a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary to pray to the Madonna.
